"Electronic Repeat Prescription Failure"

About: General practices in Ayrshire & Arran

(as the patient),

I have been putting repeat prescriptions in electronically every 2 weeks for the last 7-8 years. Year it seems because my prescription contains opioid painkillers every time my GP at the Kilwinning Medical Practice is on holiday these prescriptions are not fulfilled. I put one in one recent Saturday to be picked up Tuesday only to be told by the receptionist that they have no record of the request despite me showing them the request online AND the confirmation that it had been read by the surgery yesterday.

My GP is currently on holiday so I have now been told to wait until after 4 o’clock to See What Can Be Done. I suffer from Crohn’s disease and severe joint pain and saw my GP 2 weeks ago confirming I’m going through a particularly bad flare up just now where I have had to resort to a liquid diet only.

This emphasis for me the need for the requested medication on time as I have to plan a day before to even leave the house without having an accident when out.

I now have no anti diarrhoea medication which is just making the whole situation worse.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear Chally2,

I am really sorry this has been a problem and one that re-occurs. I know I cant fully know how this impacts on your life, but I can only imagine that it is very difficult for you and a barrier to receiving your medication is the last thing you need. As I understand it, I think the GP practice will have to take this up with the community Pharmacist on your behalf.

I hope they get it sorted,

Best wishes,

Eunice

The community pharmacist isn’t involved, I always pick up in person or my wife picks up from the surgery because of this problem. Doing this cuts out one avenue of investigation and saves time when things go wrong because I’m not up to walking back and forth from the pharmacy to the surgery multiple times.
