Around 2 years ago my daughter was admitted to RACH with a fractured femur in her left leg, we were admitted straight away and advised there would be a 6 week stay. I was very nervous as she was only 1 and a half years old at the time and it was summer holidays and would be away from my son for that time.
I could not have got through the 6 weeks without the care, support and attention of all staff in Ward 2 - Surgical Ward, from the nurses, kitchen staff, student nurses, axillaries, domestic staff and especially Megan the play leader.
Keeping a little girl of that age would have been tough, but she formed a special bond with Megan and enjoyed seeing her.
All the staff were attentive and helped keep her occupied and also made sure I was ok, as she was so young I only left her side to get changed, I was given a room in the Parents suite downstairs but only spent a few times there, and decided to sleep by my daughters bed.
It was also made very special as they celebrated her 2nd birthday with a little party for her in the play area.
I can not fault any of the staff, sometimes with the worry and panic we face as parents we forget that they are human too, and really stretched but go above and beyond to make sure all child's and your needs are catered for.
I definitely appreciate more what the NHS staff have to go through, with very little funding to help.
