"Variation in standard and approach of care"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Maternity

I really think more needs to be done to ensure staff are consistent with best practice. Examples include when I was wheeled into theatre and told I could take the baby with me. The midwife told me that while they were prepping (I.e before anaesthetic was administered) I could hold the baby and the prep did take quite a while. Unfortunately the midwife in the theatre snapped ‘she can’t have a baby on her’ to which my midwife calmly replied that it was just while things were being prepped and the surgeon agreed. The midwife then snapped ‘where’s her partner, she can’t have a baby in here without her partner’ and my birth partner (a female doula) was sat on a chair right next to me! Clearly ignored because she was not male! It was so rude and distressing and undid all the hard work of the previous midwife to calm me! I was then asked if I wanted any music to play and I requested my relaxation track. This was put on and was great.., except a student anaesthetist and a couple of others stood by my head, literally inches from my ear during the procedure talking loudly about operations he wanted to be involved in and even challenging some of hospital policies. It was so loud, distracting and unsettling I couldn’t hear the track or relax. I also spent time getting a risk review and birth plan agreed with the head of the birth centre. This was fantastic and really put my mind at ease... except when I came across one midwife who read through it and asked who had signed it and asked ‘did they approve this?’ ‘Is the doctor going to allow you to do that?’ despite there being no change in my situation and it all being approved.. This put fear in me that there was no point in agreeing anything with the head of the birth centre because some midwives would ignore it! You do so much good work but it’s easily undone by others.
