My aunt has just spent 8 weeks in the Western Isles hospital Erisort ward after suffering a major stroke. As she doesn't live in Stornoway her immediate family and friends couldn't be in on a daily basis, as they needed a ferry journey to do so. With prior arrangement and on the understanding that I didn't disrupt the staff in their duties I was able to visit when it fitted in with my own work and family life. Some days I would be in twice others just once. I was encouraged where appropriate to be a part of her care, this helped to deepen the bond we have with one another, making her experience and mine so much better.
I was moved by the extra kindness and care that was given to her, well above their pay grade. No matter how busy the staff were they had time to stop for a few words. Her laundry was dealt with by the league of friends, again freeing me up to chat and spend quality time with her, rather then having to rush home to clean her clothes.
Everyone involved in her care helped to make the whole experience so good. She was up and dressed every day in preparation and hope of getting home to her own home in a routine. Sadly her level of health will not allow this to be the case, but she was allowed to keep a hold of this hope by the staff which I found to be such a blessing.
I thank them all from the bottom of my heart.
