"Visit to A and E"

About: Sunderland Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

My 79 year old husband was referred to A& E by ambulance on Tuesday as he was unable to get out of bed or walk and was in excrutiating pain. He was seen by the nurse practitioners as given pain relief, X-rays and blood tests. After several hrs he was seen by two orthopaedic doctors who both examined him. They said they would refer him for an urgent MRI for Friday which I would receive by post or phone call and he would get an appointment at the Spinal clinic. They also said they would arrange pain relief to go home with. After they left the nursing staff came in to ask what they had said as they had not passed any information on. I told them about appointment for Friday and that we would be given pain relief. After over an hour the sister came in to apologise and stated she had contacted them . We left with a few tablets they had on ward . On Thursday I rang hospital to find out about MRI scan, after trying to explain to A and E receptionist who didn’t want to know I was transferred to Radiology who told me it would be 3 to 4 weeks as it was a normal referral. My husband is still in pain and nothing has been done. I am appalled at lack of care and communication. I have rang my GP to try to get some help
