"Poor care before and after liver biopsy"

About: Blackheath Hospital

I was admitted to Blackheath hospital on Monday 13th may for a liver biopsy. I was quite apprehensive as the procedure is not without risk. We were shown to my room by the receptionist. We were a little early the liver biopsy was booked for 2 30 but we were asked to be there for 1.45. Once in the room we were left for over an hour. No nurse or member of staff came in to take my details or give me a gown etc. The first person who entered the room was the consultant who was very informative and lovely to speak to. A nurse eventually turned up way past the biopsy appointment time. I had the biopsy and the consultant specifically told the nurse that I should have observations every 15 minutes for the first 2 hours. A liver biopsy has a high risk of bleeding which can be very serious for the patient. I was taken back to my room my obs were taken and then I was left for over an hour without any further observation being done. When the nurse finally came back she asked if anyone else had been in I said no nobody has checked on me. She did my obs then but I was not happy that the Drs instructions had been ignored. Later a sister came in to check the site of the wound. She looked in my groin area and said she couldn't see the wound. I had to tell her I had had a liver biopsy and point out where the site was. All in all the experience on the ward was unacceptable and I did not feel cared for. I cannot praise the Dr enough before and during the procedure. He also checked on me afterwards before he went home.
