"Frustrating and upsetting"

About: Queen Elizabeth I I Hospital (Welwyn Garden City)

What could be improved

It is 9 weeks on from when my Mother-in-law was first referred to the QEII with a grapefruit size lump in her stomach.

She has had blood tests, scans, one visit to Lister A&E and a biopsy - all inconclusive and still no treatment plan.

The lump is now the size of a cushion and causing extreme distress, difficulty eating etc and yet there seems to be a complete lack of urgency on behalf of the hospital to come to the aid of an 88 year old woman.

My sister-in-law has had to ring up repeatedly to get appointments and results, she was given a number for this department when she phoned for the biopsy results 2 weeks ago but that phone is never answered and she has had no response for over a week to the messages left on the answer phone.

Today we went back to the GP who was surprised at the delays and promised to try and contact the department for us - message tonight is they haven't been able to get through.

What do we have to do to get some action ?

I am now using every route possible to try and get things moving - hence these comments.

Formal complaints have also been registered with the complaints team for East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust.

We're sorry that this has been your experience - although we note that you have made a formal complaint, we would like to be able to help you and ensure that as a family, you get the responses you need so that you understand better what's happening in terms of your mother-in-law's care. If you e-mail us at generalenquiries.enh-tr@nhs.net, providing us with your mother-in-law's details (name, address and date of birth), we can then follow your concerns up with the team caring for her.
