I really couldn't fault any aspect of my care in the Plastic Surgery department from my initial telephone contact to the completed challenging breast reconstruction. The care was organised, communication and continuity of care really excellent, and the helpfulness and attitude of the whole team were amazing, both in outpatients, during my 5 day inpatient stay and my many telephone and email queries. There was no hint of the cynicism that is so endemic in the NHS, and the team worked hard to achieve an amazing result for me despite some very challenging medical circumstances. I really appreciated the Enhanced Recovery Programme which made me feel involved in my care and gave me a framework to work with, as well an enabling me to go home sooner. I felt that my privacy and confidentiality were respected. I was particularly impressed with how unnecessary elements and repetition had been stripped from the standard hospital processes to focus time and attention on the elements that really improve the patient experience. As a doctor myself from another region, and as someone on their second cancer and second free-flap breast reconstruction, I can honestly say that the care I received was absolutely outstanding in every respect, and this is the first time I have been in the position of making such a statement. Well done Southmead Plastic Surgery department! I couldn't have asked for anything more and the experience has made a real positive difference to my cancer journey. Thank you.
