"Incorrect name tag given to Mum"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Care of the Elderly (Wards 13-16)

(as a relative),

My mum was sent to Hairmyres hospital straight from a GP appointment we arrived and after some tests and a long wait in ambulatory care my mum was admitted after 10 PM following a six hour wait. She went for further tests the following day and after being sent for ct scan they noticed she had a Male name tag on and was sent back to the ward, they changed this and then sent her back down. This is obviously very concerning as she had tests and was given medication and her details not checked. She was transferred to ward six on and stayed there to her discharge in mid- May 2019 for further care.

I am very concerned regarding staff behaviours. My mum has dementia and a UTI as well as other health issues. The staff on the ward actually did a "wee cheer" when my mum's medication arrived on Thursday when she was discharged. I appreciate dealing with elderly patients who due to their condition can be demanding but she deserves to be treated with respect and I know staff should be trained and be dementia friendly.   My mum was then contacted on Friday morning to be readmitted which caused her further stress. I think the staff were to keen to discharge and did not wait for blood results putting her health in jeopardy.

Dear jb9fd

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your mum's recent experience. I am sorry that your mother had such a long wait to be admitted to the ward. As you know we do try to ensure that we transfer patients to the appropriate area as soon as possible. My sincere apologies that there was such a delay for your mum.

I am also sorry to hear that you had concerns regarding staff behaviours and that your mum was given the wrong wrist band. In order to fully explore all these issues I would be grateful if you could contact patient affairs on 01355 585325 to give some more details.

Your mum has obviously had a very difficult time and it is important that we reflect and learn from her experience. Thank you again for raising your concerns. I hope to speak with you soon and hope that your mum is recovering well.

Thank you

Lise
