"Waiting list for Nexplanon implant"

About: General practices in Tayside

(as the patient),

The Princes Street surgery has a months long waiting list to have a Nexplanon implant removed and replaced due to the shortage of staff that do it. By the time an appointment is available it will be 3 months after my current one has expired. I have never had a problem getting an appointment before and have used the device for 9 years, it was not communicated to me that there was a waiting list or I would have added my name to it months before I did. I have now had to make an appointment at the local hospital to have this simple procedure done.

Dear PRT89,

thank you for taking the time to share your experience. I am sorry for your wait and the implications of that. It seems that you have made alternative arrangements through the hospital which was the right thing to do. I would like to remind you that you will need to use another form of contraception from the date your current implant runs out.

I will discuss your experience with colleagues to consider what improvements might be required and update you when I know more.

Thank you again

Tracey

Dear PRT89,

I have now had an opportunity to discuss your wait for Nexplanon with the Practice Manager who is sorry for the inconvenience this caused you. Unfortunately a number of clinics were cancelled in short succession to facilitate leave requests, and therefore the waiting time has temporarily increased. The practice have agreed to consider the impact of leave requests on waiting times in the future so that this does not happen again.

Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Tracey
