"No hoist at Stonehouse Hospital"

About: Stonehouse Hospital / General Medicine

(as a carer),

As carer I recently attended Stonehouse Hospital in April 2019, with one off the service users I support, My client is disabled and is in a wheelchair, an appointment had been arranged for them to see a  Dr. within the gastro team, this involved my client having an examination, when I was asked if there was a hoist available I was told no, this leading to my client having to be manually lifted from wheelchair to plinth.

The Doctor and a nurse and myself lifted my client, after the examination this had to be repeated from plinth to wheelchair, this resulted in my client not being properly fitted or seated in their wheelchair.

The hospital was aware that this person uses a wheelchair and has no mobility, my concerns are why was there not a hoist available at the hospital. Surely hospitals are equipped with all necessary equipment for all kinds of patients whether they have mobility issues or not.

I look forward to your responses

Dear runningpe94

First may I apologise for your experience at Stonehouse outpatients. I appreciate this would not have been an easy situation for yourself or for your service user, who was a patient of ours for this appointment.

I can confirm that all NHS Lanarkshire hospitals are equipped with the correct medical equipment for the safe Moving & Handling of all our patients. I am very saddened to hear of this issue.

Can I bother you to ask if you would mind contacting me direct on 01355 585154 to pass on the details of your visit so I can investigate this further for you? I should however point out, that due to data protection, I do need permission from the patient to discuss this with you.

I look forward to hearing from as I am keen to progress this to avoid such situations arising in the future.

Kind Regards

Hazel
