"Over and above effort in complex situation"

About: Borders General Hospital / Maternity care

(as the patient),

I had particularly complex issues influencing my baby's recent c-section delivery, concerning my terror of all things related to pregnancy and childbirth (diagnosed as “tocophobia” during prior antenatal counselling before I was pregnant).

Dr Hayward, working in Anaesthetics:

She put in a big effort to chat with me and reassure me beforehand, on multiple occasions where her efforts were beyond what a patient can reasonably expect a busy anaesthetist to provide, and provided a calm level-headed voice during the process of the c-section itself.

Dr McGowan, working in Obstetrics:

He was amazing throughout. He offered a delicate balance of information and reassurance leading up to the delivery, unwavering support for my delivery choices, and expertise/reassurance during the theatre process - I'm so glad he was my obstetrician, and it's clear he's highly regarded by patients and staff alike when I mentioned he was doing my c-section in the community/to other BGH employees.

Team work

Team work

Without exception, across all the staff I met at Borders General Hospital, each team’s ‘over and above’ effort to provide calm antenatal support & reassurance (both before, during and post-caesarean, as well as on the recovery in Ward 17) contributed as critical input to reducing my anxiety and make the experience nothing like my worst fears had imagined.
Specifically I’d like to pointedly recognise a few people and teams by name:
The Ward 17 Midwives:
Claire and Shona (for their excellent, personalised care planning), Claire (for her limitless patience and soothing theatre presence), Susie (for her unwavering pragmatism and encouragement), Libby & Amy & Carol (for their hours of immense feeding expertise), Ellen (for her unfailing sympathy to a frazzled mother at 4am), plus impressive student midwife Lyndsay (for her hours of breastfeeding troubleshooting, who will make a superb midwife once qualified) & the extremely kind Healthcare Assistant Janet who helped out with multiple ad hoc queries when needed.

Congratulations on the birth of your baby and thank you for taking the time to feedback about your experience throughout your hospital journey. We appreciate how busy you will be and your comments are very kind.

Childbirth and parenthood can be a daunting thought and we strive to support women and their husbands/partners/families as much as possible to ensure their care is centered around them and their individual requirements.

I shall ensure your feedback is shared with the team involved in your care. I am pleased you felt well supported and the staff will be delighted to read your kind comments.

best wishes

Shona
