"Experience of CT3 and Team from an autistic..."

About: University Hospitals Of Leicester NHS Trust

G is a 51 year old autistic man requiring a CT for the first time in his life. The appointment was booked by a consultant with the information that he will require some assistance, The CT team were not expecting what they got. G lacks capacity to consent so we had the challenge of Best Interests to overcome which meant a delay in getting in. Finally, we agreed to proceed and G went into the scan room - he was very scared and did not understand what the team wanted him to do. One of G's Care workers took charge and ordered all out bar the radiographer and herself and she worked with the radiographer to support G through the procedure. It took a little longer than normal but with the worker in the room with him he was enabled by the team in CT3 to actually get the procedure done. The staff were amazing but there are definitely lessons to be learned from the experience that would make the patient journey easier for people like G. To this end I would be happy to meet with the team at UHL to discuss further as the consent form for instance is so not fit for purpose as there is nothing about capacity.
