"Consultant made me feel ashamed"

About: St Helens Hospital / Ophthalmology

I left this eye clinic in floods of tears. First visit the consultant said I had a swollen optic nerve and then said but I don't know you very well as to why you have this so said ill see someone within a week. The drops in one of my eyes didn't work properly and he was shouting at me to look at him when being examined but couldn't keep my eye open with a great big light down my eye without it being dilated!!! My head hurt for a week after this. I thought it couldn't get any worse than the treatment I got the first time round. Boy was I wrong the second consultant was basically mocking my syndrome asking me questions about it, pronouncing it wrong repeatedly and laughing to then interrupt me mid way talking correcting me on my knowledge. I was so embarrassed I didn't know what he was trying to get out of me? He basically ended the consultion telling me about my syndrome! When I know all about it. I'm sick of having to have to explain my condition and doctors looking at me like I'm stupid. I can't even begin to explain how confused I was. I waited 2 hours in the busiest waiting room for that? He greeted me with a hello and I said hello how are you and he replied fed up bluntly. I don't think I've ever been treated with so much disrespect in my life. I didn't ask to be born with this syndrome yet I was treated like it was a laughing matter. I won't bother coming to the next appointment and will cancel. Disgusting behavior. The nurses and reception staff are all lovely no faulting them.

Note to consultants please don't talk to people like dirt who have syndromes as it's not our faults we just want to know if we are okay.

I'd rather suffer the consequences of my condition than see a consultant here again. Thanks a bunch!

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback about your experience in the eye clinic at St Helens hospital. I am very disappointed to hear that you did not have a positive patient experience whilst in the department. It is very important to us that all our patients are treated with dignity and respect so it is displeasing to hear that this was not your experience. Please except our apologies for any distress that was caused during your appointment. Please contact me directly, Samantha Whelan Patient Experience Manager on 0151 2904136 if you would like to discuss your concerns or contact the PALS department who will also be happy to help you, 0151 4301376.

Once again thank you for getting in touch.
