"Discharged while I still had a canular in my arm."

About: Addenbrooke's Hospital / Ear, Nose and Throat

After attending my doctor regarding my issue they referred me to go and see the ENT department at A&E department with a refferal letter. I was fully aware I wasn't an emergency and there may be a short wait. I arrived just before 12pm. Within 10 minutes I was called through to see the lady but she said I most likely needed to see a jaw specialist, but she stuck a lovely camera down my nose to my mouth and arranged that my bloods would be taken and to go back to the waiting area. I sat back in the waiting area for 40 minutes and then had my bloods taken leaving a canular in my arm just in case. I was then asked to go back to the waiting room. Here is where everything went wrong. At 3.40 I asked a member of staff if there was any news on my blood results so I could be told if that was the problem or if it was a jaw specialist. He told me it looked like my results were back but I would need to wait for the ENT team to call my name. At 4.40 I still hadn't been called and approached a nurse to ask if i could take some pain killers. She checked for my name but couldn't find me. She found me on the list of patients that have been discharged. My name was never called I was still sitting with a canular in my arm not knowing what was going to happen next. Then I was asked to sit down again and 2 mins later I was called through again to a different lady who said "so as far as I'm aware you were waiting for blood results and if they were clear you were going to be discharged" I replied and said well no I was told I would be put down for an urgent referral to see a jaw specialist to which she agreed with me but didn't seem to know anything about. So if I hadn't of got up and asked for painkillers I wonder how much longer I would have been sitting there for. Still in a huge amount of pain from my issue. Nothing different prescribed. Ibprofen and paracetamol don't quite cut the pain out. And no time scale to when I'll have an appointment for the jaw specialist. For now I still can only open my mouth 1cm wide.

All staff were lovely especially the last lady I saw in A&E who also greeted me but I am concerned about the lack of communication. My doctors referral was also taken which has private information on it and I have not received it back. Where is it?

Thank you for taking the time to describe your visit to the Emergency Department. Whilst it is good to hear that the staff were pleasant, we would like to be able to look into the concerns you have raised and respond to you. We would be grateful if you could contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 01223 216756 or email pals@addenbrookes.nhs.uk so that we can take some further details.

Once again, I am sorry to hear about the problems you encountered.
