"I will never forget them"

About: City Hospital / Cardiology West Midlands Ambulance Service University NHS Foundation Trust / Emergency ambulance

(as the patient),

To cut a long story short… In late 2017 I suffered a MI which led to an arrest whilst in the back of the ambulance on the way to hospital. It was the most traumatic event I had ever experienced, which led to a great deal of uncertainty about many things. The fact that I survived is a testament to the skill of all the staff involved and the great care and treatment that I received.

The ambulance arrived within one or two minutes and, whilst in throws of a MI, the blue lights of the ambulance was a sight to rival the most serene sunset anywhere in the world. Whilst in the ambulance I went into cardiac arrest. CPR was administered until I reached the hospital, where my heart was restarted. There can be no doubt that the ambulance crew did an amazing job. I had two stents inserted and after several days in intensive care, I was moved into ward D7 until I was well enough to be discharged. Thereafter, I attended cardio rehab, which helped me become mobile again and build trust and confidence between mind and body.

The ambulance crew were amazing and I can only describe the ‘cath lab’ as a miracle factory. The care in the intensive care unit and D7 was second to none. Once I was able to get back on my feet the fantastic and enduring work at cardio rehab restored me to some degree of normality.

There were too many people involved in the above process to name individually and I suspect they will not remember me, but I will never forget them. To them, I am eternally grateful.

Thank you so much for sharing this story, it's great to hear how well your recovery has progressed. I will pass on your story to the D7 team at City who I'm sure will be thrilled. I wish you all the very best in the future. Kind regards, Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
