"Mum's final journey"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Accident & Emergency Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance

(as a relative),

My mum was admitted as an emergency admission to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow with a  massive stroke and died very peacefully with all of  the family  around her a day later. From the moment she was assessed by the paramedics at home, taken to the hospital, admitted to A& E and then transferred to ARU4, where she died. her care was dignified and professional. This made the final journey with our mum the best it could be in a harrowing situation. Particular thanks go to the paramedics who kept us calm and informed; the  consultant on duty  in A& E that day who had compassionate communication skills and involved the family in decision making; and the nursing and staff of ARU4 who kept mum comfortable by changing her position regularly, teaching us how to do mouth care, speedily administering appropriate medication and making sure that we as a family (all 10 of us) could be with mum - that time together with her was a real gift to us - thank you.

Dear EKresident

I was sorry to hear about your mother's passing - my condolences are with you and your family at this difficult time. I'm glad to hear however that as a family you were able to spend those last few precious moments with her and that the care she received while in hospital was compassionate and professional.

I will be sure to feedback your comments to all the departments involved and I am sure they will appreciate your kind words.

Kind Regards

Kevin

Dear EKresident,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your feedback with us on CareOpinion. I am very sorry to learn of the passing of your mother. Please accept my sincerest condolences. This must be a very difficult time for you and your family which makes the words you use at this time very powerful indeed.

Thank you very much for the kind comments about our crew and of the staff of our partners in the wider NHS. I am very pleased to read about the compassion that was shown by all and in particular, the professionalism it would appear that has been shown by the crew. As a paramedic, involving the family by keeping them informed and calm can be a difficult task as your focus is mainly on the patient but it is just as important and it would appear that they have managed this.

I would be very keen to pass on your comments to the crew and their manager and thank them for carrying out their duties in the manner that they have. If you would like for this to happen can you email me at alan.martin2@nhs.net. I would just require your mothers name, the address in which the vehicle was sent and a date and rough time. It would also be very helpful if you referred to your CareOpinion username in the subject to allow me to link the email to this story.

Again, thank you very much for taking the time to write this and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Kind Regards

Alan
