I arrived at minor injury unit in Stirling with a male Autistic adult, as we approached the reception desk there appeared to be some technical problems with the computer although Allison(as I found out later was the receptionist name) had a few people waiting she coped very professionally and reassured us at all times asking if we needed to sit down and she would call us.
when I became our turn Allison listened to myself who was representing the Autistic Adult and was very understanding to the nature of his Autism as he can represent very challenging behaviour if he does not understand, he is hypersensitive to noise and not very patient, Allison phoned through to speech to a nurse who took us threw to a quiet room to wait, she was friendly and informative and explained she would try and get us seen as soon as could, within a 5-10 min we were seen, and he was examined and took straight through for an x-ray, nurses in x-ray were chatty and friendly and include my Service user in the conversation although he is non-verbal this was making him laugh and settled. we then went back to the quiet room and Leanne came back and explained the results and treatment, nurse Leanne and receptionist Allison made this visit pleasant and easier under the circumstances, as this could have turned out to be a very challenging experience for both myself ( Key worker) and the non-verbal autistic male.
"Pleasant and easy under the circumstances"
