"A total lack of communication on the unit"

About: Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh at Little France / Surgical Observation Unit

(as a relative),

Have not been able to fault the care my mum has received from the Royal Infirmary in Edinburgh over the past 5 years - until our last visit. She has had excellent care from all departments - Cardiology, Gastroenterology, A&E and many others. Mum had an out of hrs appointment for vomiting and severe abdominal pain. As a precaution the GP wanted mum to get a surgical consult to check nothing happening with her hernia or anything else.   We got checked into the unit in the evening with bloods taken. After that not one person spoke to us or came anywhere near us. I had to ask outside the ward for an update at over an hour later where I was told the blood work was back, they were waiting for doctor handover and for them to look at results. Again no-one came to check on mum at all. Mum chased again outside the ward and eventually a doctor came to see us, mum got x-rays and was released very late in the evening. We have no objections to having to wait for that long and totally appreciate how busy the doctors are (especially out of hours), however there was a total lack of communication on the unit about was happening and a lack of care to not even check on mum or offer her a drink of water (again appreciate she may have needed surgery and that fasting may be required - this information was only provided when we pushed about eating and drinking).

Dear V disappointed

Thank you very much for sharing your feedback with us following your mother's recent assessment in the Surgical Observation Unit and I am pleased to read that over the years your mother has good care from the staff at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

I am sorry that more recently you found there was a lack of communication about what was happening regarding your mother's situation. You and your mother should have had things explained to you as I am sure that this would have helped your both during this time.

I have shared your feedback with the team and have asked them to remind staff of the importance of accurate and timely communication with patients and their families.

I do hope your mother is feeling better and thank you again for sharing your feedback with us.

Kind regards

Jeannette
