My grandson was on holiday with his other gran. When he came home he had what we were told was conjunctivitis. At the time I was ill myself so it was left to his other gran to get him to doctors. He was referred to Inverclyde after trying lots of different antibiotics. He saw the doctors in Inverclyde and was given several different eye drops. They eventually discharged him. He was also losing his hearing. Doctor told him that lots of deaf children went to school.
We, both me and his other gran, were getting more and more worried as nothing they were trying was helping. His aunt in England phoned a nearby private hospital, and got him an appointment there. The doctor there recognised he was a very ill young man. This doctor phoned the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital and he was seen very soon after.
The care he was given was second to none. The doctors were excellent, he has been turned outside in with all the tests he has had. He was eventually diagnosed with a vascular condition called Cogan’s Syndrome. The doctors in the children’s hospital would have liked to have seen him earlier. His eyes have some scarring at the back but it does not seem to have affected his sight. His hearing is bad but he still has it but has to use hearing aids. Though we are still worried about this. We feel that if his G.P. had referred him on when all the antibiotics were having no affect it may have helped his hearing more and if the eye department had done the same again it may have helped.
I am in no way saying Inverclyde is a bad hospital I myself had Ovarian Cancer when all this was going on and was treated excellently there after I had a bad experience after my first chemo. My grandson was not so lucky. He has to go up to Opthalmology and the doctor who discharged him could now not be nicer. On the whole I think that after we went to the Queen Elizabeth his treatment has been excellent but before that it was very bad. His GP no good at all and the doctor in Inverclyde should have known better.
