"Ward with newborn"

About: Heartlands Hospital / Maternity

(as the patient),

I was in Aspen ward recovering from an Manual Removal of Placenta (MROP).

It was 23 degrees outside and the ward was far hotter than that. There were no fans, no air con, i could not get my newborn baby cool enough. I had stripped my baby down to my baby's vest, but my baby was covered in heat rash and panting and had beads of sweat on the forehead.

There was no where to go to get away from the heat. I asked for a cooler room and sat in a different room for a while but it wasn’t much cooler. I was panicking for my baby who was hours old and my milk had not come in yet for my baby.

I feel that the ward needs fans or air con or some way of providing a cooler space in the hot conditions.

Dear GylcG

I am sorry to hear your patient journey did not meet with your expectations. The estates department do moderate temperatures and adjust the heating systems if they are made aware that the environment has become too warm or cool. Staff will provide fans where possible and open windows to allow air to circulate, however, there are times when these actions do not cool the area.

I will make the Estates Manager and Ward Sister aware of your concerns, who will be able to monitor the situation and make adjustments.

Many Congratulations on the birth of your baby, we wish you well.

Kind regards

The Patient Experience Team
