"Miss-reported Handovers and Respect for..."

About: Royal Sussex County Hospital / Neurology

I am currently in the neurological ward, but my journey to here has included A&E, and Neurological ICU in this hospital.

I have been a professional who has always supported fellow health professionals, but I feel my experience is of grave concern.

I have re-entered hospital due to an infected wound caused by spinal surgery. In my transfer from ward to ward, vital information has been misreported and even handed over as the exact reverse.

I came to the hospital having been prescribed for years two versions of a medicine called Ropinerole that address an unpleasant condition - akin to being electrocuted every few seconds (usually 17 for me); 1mg to be taken when needed, and two mg last thing at night. This replaces the expensive patch that delivers a constant flow. I also take Simvastatin and am allergic to Morphine.

In one transfer it had been recorded that I was allergic to not only Morphine, but Simvastatin and Ropinerole - I refused my pescription because I was told I was allergic to them - I had to be assertive for the mistake to be reversed but surely this is a case of ‘computer says no’, when the authority is lying in front of them.

At most handovers I have had to defend the 1mg dose is ‘a hoc’, and the 2mg dose is the regular issue, because this seemed to shift at every handover.

This afternoon no lunch arrived I was told it was because i was ‘nil by mouth’. I had to yet again explain their error that I had my operation days ago. Then I failed to receive any supper – presumably for the same reason.

The latest Dr has interpreted my drugs regime as being 1mg once, and once only in the day and the 2mg at night – in total two items instead of the usual 3, 4 or even 6 x 1mg’s an th 2mg when things are difficult.

And to exacerbate this further, because it has been recorded that I had 1mg and 2mg earlier in the day when the activity has been extreme due to the surgery, there is no prescription let an her refuses to ‘extend’ the prescription.

I have at least a night of being electrocuted every 17 seconds to look forward to if I relax one iota. Staff and systems seem to demonstrate no regard for the experience of the patient about their own well being, and over-rely on the non-expert professionals and inaccurate recording systems.

As a result of this complaint, I expect the following:

* me and/or my GP to be contacted immediately and the prescription to be reinstated

*an apology for the horrendous anxiety that has been caused and the nightmare of being shocked every 17 seconds until it is deemed that I am allowed another dose of the medicine that usually resides freely available at my bedside.

*Reassurance that all docs will retain EXACTLY the same information and be amnstered the same.
