"Hit and miss with care received"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital / Maternity

I had my daughter here in 2011 and the care I received was excellent but I can not say the same for the care received for my pregnancy in 2019. I have had 3 blood tests lost resulting in my blood group not being recorded within my notes. Being RH Negative it is important that my blood group is noted so that Anti- D injections can be given at 28 weeks of pregnancy and within 24hrs of my birth. Luckily I am aware of my blood group from previous pregnancies so knew I needed an appointment for 28 weeks of pregnancy. For first time mums they may not be aware of their blood group being RH Negative and therefore not inquire about an Anti- D appointment if one was not automatically generated due to blood group information being lost. I mentioned to my community midwife about my RH status at my 16 week appointment who didn’t chase up an appointment for me. I was also asked to repeat a blood test at 16 weeks to find out my blood group as the other results were lost and after going for this blood test the results were also lost. Which not only meant I spent hours waiting for blood tests which were lost but my blood group wasn’t recorded and my anti-d appointment not made. At 22 weeks I had a VBAC clinic appointment with a lovely midwife who took the time to chase up my missing blood tests and phone the lab which confirmed they had no record of my blood group. She kindly got a midwife to bleed me so that I didn’t have to wait even more for a blood test. She even rang the same day with my result and an appointment for my Anti-D. She also answered all my questions professionally and openly which meant a lot of worry and concern was lifted off my shoulder. She restored my faith in the ante-natal department and I can’t thank her enough for the care I received from her and the midwife that bleed me.

Thank you for taking time to contact us with feedback. We are pleased to hear about the midwife who restored your faith in service and care provided by the Bart's health after your experience with antenatal in 2019.

Thank you for flagging this issue which we have shared with antenatal services for reflection and improvements where necessary.
