"10 Hour wait in waiting room before being seen"

About: Southend Hospital / Accident and emergency

I was taken to Southend hospital by a paramedic car as no ambulances available. I was on gas and air due to extremely painful stomach and continuous vomiting. I was placed in Southend A&E department and waited for just over an hour to be seen by triage. Although the waiting room wasn't very busy, I understand the staff were busy in majors area of A&E. However, after 5 hours wait the medicine the paramedic had given me had worn off and i was in a lot of discomfort and started to be sick again. It took my partner 5 visits to the reception desk to ask for some painkillers to help me and well over an hour and a half wait before I was given anything to help. I was then left in the waiting room for a few more hours before my bloods were taken and then placed outside again with a promise of more pain relief shortly. After 10 hours wait I finally saw a doctor who gave me anti sickness medication, morphine and placed me on a drip as I was dehydrated and refered me to the SAU ward to be assessed for a bowel blockage. I waited on a trolly in a freezing cold A&E for a further 4 hours without being checked on or even offered a blanket. The only people to check on us was the NHS customer care team as I had been waiting in A&E for 12 hours and they wanted to know what they could do to help. We simply asked if we could be updated on what we was waiting for.. ie to see a doctor from SAU or a bed. The lady made a note and said she would find out what's going on! I never heard anything back from them!!! I was in A&E for a total of 14 hours and I've never met so many cold, rude, heartless nursing staff in my life. I understand they are busy and stressed but there is no need to be rude to people. My partner was polite and respectful and we made no fuss and certainly didn't deserve to be spoken too so rudely by the staff in A&E. Just some help with pain relief and a little dignity for me would have made those 14 hours of hell a little bit more tolerable. Terrible service, I'm shocked and feel panicy that my family and I have to rely on the terrible hospital in an emergency.. it's a scary thought.
