"How do we get support?"

About: Lanarkshire Community Services / Dietetics and Nutrition

(as a parent/guardian),

I feel that my daughter has been so let down by the system I no longer know where to go or what to do to get her help.

She was diagnosed with anorexia several years ago and got support from CAMHS. She was transferred to adult services and has had so many psychiatrists i have lost count. or a short time she saw a dietitian but this was stopped as she was no longer seeing a CPN, although she was still under the psychiatrist.

She was supposed to have been referred to psychology and this has been promised 3 or 4 times but has never happened. She was referred back to a dietitian who told my daughter that they can't work with her until she has a psychologist.

In the meantime my daughter is barely eating and now has a BMI of around 17.5. She phoned the psychiatrist secretary who told her to phone psychology who said they've not had a referral and to phone the psychiatrist back!! They are now saying they need to speak to psychiatrist and will call her back. Her anxiety is through the roof and she's getting no support. We tried to go private to a hypnotherapist but she's not any better. I don't know what to do to get her support??

Dear Worried-Mum

Thank you for calling to give me more details about the problems that your daughter has had in accessing Psychological Services, and the Dietetics Service. I have been able to review her recent contact with Psychiatry, and have contacted the Consultant Psychologist in your daughter's locality. I've also contacted the Head of Dietetics.

As agreed on the phone, I will contact you with further information by the start of next week.

Kind regards

Gary

And still we wait... So.....following my post on here 2 months ago Dr Gary Tanner got in touch and I was told my daughter would get to see someone in the mental health team. Eventually after 3 phone calls and chasing up she got an appointment. Ti be told they would take her case back to the MDT meeting...........and they would appoint a CPN.....I do not feel that this is what she needs, she needs psychological input. They also said to make a GP appointment and get bloods done and a general health check and to get GP to refer to dietitian. Made an appointment on to get bloods done.....an hour before the appointment the surgery phoned....we have a referral here from MHT requesting bloods, GP says they should have given her forms and sent her to Douglas St spoke to GP who said OK let her come but really they should not have sent her back to GP!! I have no idea what is going to happen. She now has an appt with CPN - I feel she doesn't need a CPN she needs a psychologist. In the past, CPN''s have just given her a workbook to fill out. Appts last 10 mins.....is this help? I feel let down by the system. My daughter is crying out for help and it's just not there. Would go private but where do you find a private psychologist???

Dear Worried-Mum,

I am sorry that you feel disappointed with the service offered to your daughter to date and that you feel your let down by the system. This would never be our intention and as service manager I aim to explore some of the issues you have raised.

It may however be more appropriate to have a face to face discussion with you and your daughter in order to progress any concerns and find a resolution. I would like to arrange this with the Senior Charge Nurse for the team on her return from leave next week. If you and your daughter are agreeable to this please call me on 01698 723188 and I will make arrangements.

If I'm not in the office please leave your contact number with my secretary and I will return your call at the earliest opportunity.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,

Tricia Rhodie
