"'I get 5 hours of therapy a week'"

About: Locked & Specialist Rehab / Hereward Wake

(as a staff member posting for a patient/service user),

I have been here for about 7 months now and before I came here I was in and out of hospital for about a year and a half. It was decided that it wasn't really safe for me to go back home because I kept ending up back in hospital and so I started searching around for DBT services. There isn’t that many in the country and so I did the pros and cons of each unit and St Andrew's came out on top.

I think that what I like most about the hospital is the different opportunities that there are. I like the activities on the ward and there is a beauty therapist and so I get a massage once a week. I really like the connection to Workbridge, I go down there twice a week and it really just helps to take my mind of things and it feels like I'm doing something useful. I also get great therapy here, I get 5 hours of therapy a week which is more than you get in most other places.

I think that it can be hard here sometimes because it is quite intensive and also things can move quite slowly unlike other hospitals, such as getting your leave, but this is good in a way because it can help stop the rollercoaster of going up and down because you are going slower.

Generally speaking the facilities here are good, the food is good and there is a gym. The only thing that I would say about the gym is that there is only a couple of slots that you can use and also the swimming pool isn't running at the moment.

It is really positive to read your story and I am glad to hear the DBT Programme is proving beneficial to your recovery, albeit it is very hard work. This is your recovery and although staff are here to support and encourage the motivation and determination needs to come from you so well done for throwing your self into the programme.

I agree that at times it can feel it takes a long time to progress but we are passionate about making this the last hospital stay you have, so the importance of getting it right which generally happens at a steady pace without rushing and overwhelming patients.

We are very lucky with the excellent facilities we have here at St Andrews and I can reassure there is lots of work going on in the background to ensure the Swimming pool is re-opened.
