"Refused medication"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / General surgery (Wards 9a, 9b, 9c & 9d)

I recently wrote a post on here about the fantastic team in Ward 11a who were there when recently having a operation and I also mentioned in it how over the years I have met nice nurses and not so nice nurses, well sadly I met the second type recently.

My wound started to bleed so attended my local hospital. They phoned Queen Elizabeth Hospital and said to send me over to check it out.

Sadly I was not admitted to 11a but another ward and was told when mentioning I had not had any of my daily medication was told I wasn't getting any cause I was 'fasting' for a Scan.

When I mentioned fasting was about not eating or drinking anything not medication the Nurse was not interested even having the cheek to ask me 'How can you take medication if you can't drink anything?'. Answering the question - everyone knows who has ever been in that position you are allowed a sip of water to take medication when fasting.

I have been taking the same medication every day since 2005, I have had operations, CT Scans, MRI Scans and every time I have been given my medication with a sip of water until meeting this nurse.

They were totally disinterested in what I was saying from the many times saying I wasn't getting it because I was fasting, they also tried to use the excuses 'the doctors got to sign for it and he's busy' and 'we're short staffed today'.

They said I wasn't getting it so I wasn't no matter what I said or explained why and apart from the medication I had taken every single day for 14 years I was also refused the pain killers prescribed by the hospital only the week before ( which I am still on) after my operation.

I was not allowed any medication of any kind because they said so no matter what I said. Luckily for me, later that day, I was transferred to Ward 11a where guess what my medication went back to be given to me as normal.

As I said have met nice nurses and not nice nurses over the years. Sadly I met both types recently.

I am so sorry to hear of your experience, especially after having such a positive experience in Ward 11A. Please accept my apologies for the distress this has caused you. We expect all our patients to be treated with compassion and to receive a high standard of care and it is disappointing when this has not been the case.
