I unfortunately made the terrible decision to have my baby in the Carmen birth centre thinking it would be a calm and less stressful experience. I could not have been more wrong. I arrived at 10pm after my waters broken and whilst there my contractions began. I was placed in a small ward like room and at 4:30am I was examined and told I was only 1cm dilated. Rather than going home I decided to stay at the hospital as it was the middle of the night. From here on everything went down hill. My contractions got worse as the day went on, and each time I asked for a midwife to check on me I was told “you’re fine, you’re still in early labour”. Come 8pm I was in complete agony and was desperate for some pain relief. My husband tried hopelessly to get a midwife to check on me but we were again simply told “she’s fine, it’s early labour”. Come 9:30pm I was in so much pain I was sick so a midwife offered me pethidine as a pain relief. My husband asked if first I could be examined to see how far long I was. Reluctantly the midwife checked and lo and behold I was over 9cm dilated! Hardly early labour! And to think I was offered pethidine which I was told should ONLY be given during early labour!! All of a sudden the midwives seemed to be paying attention and I was rushed down in a wheelchair (with a baby half way out!) to the delivery suite! I didn’t even get to use the Carmen suite delivery room as the baby was coming ASAP. They had also left it too late for any kind of pain relief. Had I not been neglected for over 24 hours and been listened to this wouldn’t have happened. Whilst I cannot then go on to fault the amazing ladies who delivered my baby and the care I received after on the Gwillim ward, I absolutely CANNOT recommend the Carmen Birth suite. It turned my straight forward labour into one of the worse experiences of my life. Please avoid the birth centre unless you want to be completely ignored and made to feel like a nuisance if you ask for help.
