"Loop excision procedure"

About: Liverpool Womens Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I had to have a loop excision procedure after my results from my smear said the changes to my cells in my cervix had gotten worse. I was very nervous but the doctor explained everything to me about the procedure, the risks, the aftercare etc but also put no pressure on me to get it done as it is my choice. Obviously I opted in as the possible alternative is worse. They allowed my boyfriend to come in with me and hold my hand. The local anaesthetic was probably the worst bit but after that I didn't really feel anything and the procedure was over in about 15 minutes. The nurses talked to me all the way through to try and take my mind off it and put me at ease. Afterwards, I had to wait for the anaesthetic to wear off as it had adrenaline in it. The nurses took me to a room where I could sit down and they brought me some tea and biscuits. They told me not to go until I felt like I was OK. They said I had been very brave and I am so grateful for the support and care they gave.

Thank you so much for taking the time to provide positive feedback regarding your recent, positive, colposcopy experience. It can be very daunting having to go through these types of procedures and we are pleased to hear that our colposcopy team provided you with the support you needed to at the time.

Your feedback has been passed to the Colposcopy manager who will share with the team.

Kind regards

Gillian Walker, Matron for Gynaecology
