About: Prince Charles Hospital Site / Gynaecology Prince Charles Hospital Site / Maternity care

(as a service user),

I had a missed miscarriage at 12 weeks pregnant but the baby hadn't developed after 7 weeks. Miscarriage is a common occurrence as I keep getting told it happens to 1 in 4 women, so why are the services so terrible? I have never experienced such bad support and services.

I had been bleeding 3 days before I miscarried and contacted my GP on a Monday who referred me to the Early Pregnancy Unit at Prince Charles Hospital for the Thursday - this was the earliest appointment. The bleeding got heavier and cramps got worse. On the Wednesday I rang my Midwife who advised me to go to A and E.

We sat in A and E for two hours before I was seen by a gynaecologist. The gynaecologist was lovely and checked my cervix via a smear and an internal examination. I was told there was no active bleeding and my cervix was closed even tho I had been heavily bleeding all morning and continued to heavily bleed when asked to go to the maternity unit for a scan. I was already very upset at this point and had to sit in a waiting area with pregnant women which isn’t fair on either of us. I then had a scan which showed that the baby hadn’t progressed and also had an internal scan where I was left covered in blood again.

Then I was sent back up to EPU to see the gynaecologist who informed me that I have miscarried but couldn’t actually tell me that I’ve had a miscarriage until the scan a week later shows everything has gone. I went home and passed the baby. I was given no information on what to expect, what my body was going through or how long I should be feeling like this. A week later came and I attended my scan. My information from the last appointment clearly wasn’t passed over and were talking to me as if this was my first scan appointment and told me that the baby hasn’t progressed (which I already knew) then waited 2 hours to see a doctor who didn’t listen to what I was saying/asking, told me information that I already knew as I had to find out myself through research from Miscarriage Association and Tommy’s.

And then I was finally given leaflets about miscarriage that I should have already had from the week before. Now I have to ring the hospital to decide what management I want to remove the remaining of the sac which I was under the impression this is what my appointment today was for. I felt no one had time or empathy. This is such a common thing and services need to be greatly improved.
