"Mum's Stroke"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Accident and emergency North Devon District Hospital / General medicine

(as a relative),

In March my Mum being unwell and we had to call for an ambulance, she was taken to Barnstable Hospital A&E department. The care was fantastic and I would like to make special mention to A&E doctor Sasha, she went above and beyond her role to make sure Mum was cared for. She even contacted Derriford Hospital with a copy of Mum's brain scan, but unfortunately they informed us that there was nothing more they could do to help.

Sasha also arranged for mum to be moved up to the Stroke ward (Staples Ward) where she was given her own room and made comfortable. The consultant on the ward was Dr Latif, he was outstanding, he explained everything to myself and my family in plain English. All staff from the Nurses, doctors and catering staff could not be faulted, there was always enough staff on and we even brought them in chocolate to keep them all going.

We were able to stay with mum and staff provided up with camp beds to sleep on. We got a call when she had been there for a week to say Mum was deteriorating so we were able to stay by her side until she passed away two days later.

Sasha even went above and beyond her role as she kept popping up from A&E to see how she was doing. The whole experience was lovely and all the staff were fantastic.

It was the little things that made a difference such as the canteen being available for family members to get something to eat and a hot drink and that there was a car parking 5 day pass available for £5 which was very helpful when my self and my sister were visiting at every visiting time.

I just wanted to praise all the staff for making this experience so lovely. The care given to Mum and our family was outstanding.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us and I would like to offer my sincere condolences on the loss of your mother.

I am pleased that the end of life care which your mother received was comforting and both you and your sister were supported at this sad time.

I am sure that Sasha and Dr Latif will appreciate your kind words and it is reassuring to know that the care your mother received from all staff was excellent.

Thank you also for commenting on the catering facilities provided by the canteen and the availability of a 5 day car parking pass which was helpful when your thoughts were with your mother.

I have forwarded on your kind comments to the Managers of the Emergency Department (ED) and Staples ward where they will be warmly received and shared with staff.

Kind regards

Jayne
