"I was struck down with a stroke"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Medical Receiving Unit (AMRU) University Hospital Hairmyres / Acute Stroke Unit (Ward 6) University Hospital Hairmyres / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

In March I was struck down with a stroke which left me with a left sided hemiparalysis   Due to the wonderful care and attention I received at Hairmyres hospital I was discharged home just over 2 weeks later. I was taken to A/E department and given an immediate CT Scan although not deemed suitable for thrombolysis I was admitted to ward 3 for observation-when my condition deteriorated I was quickly reassessed and moved to the stroke unit ward7. I was assessed almost immediately by the rehab teams of physios and OT’s who devised a rehab programme for me.

Due to Gavin Fiona and Dorothy cracking the whip I can walk and to the patience of Martin Suzy and Jayne the OT’s I have regained the use of my left hand. I’m so grateful to the medical and nursing staff who daily encouraged and motivated me   Words can not express my gratitude to the   host of wonderful individuals who work extremely hard to ensure people like me can recover from such a frightening experience..thank you all for your care and dedication.

Dear Walking Wonder

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such lovely comments about your recent care. It must have been a very worrying time for you and your kind words will be shared with all the staff you have mentioned as well as the wider team.

I am so pleased to hear that you are able to walk and have regained the use of your left hand. You have obviously worked hard with physio and OT support. All staff will be delighted to hear that you are recovering well and that their encouragement and care has enabled you to be at home.

After all you have been through it is heart warming to read your comments and I appreciate you taking time to share your experience.

I hope that your recovery continues in such a positive way. Thank you again and best wishes to you.

Lise

Dear Walking Wonder,

Thanks for the kind and thoughtful comments regarding the Occupational therapy staff that were part of your rehab journey within the stroke ward at Hairmyres.

It has been a worrying and stressful time for you no doubt but its great to hear such positive comments and hope that your recovery will continue to move in the right direction.

I am proud of all my team and will certainly pass on your kind words to each member of the Stroke team.

Thanks once again and keep up the good work in your rehabilitation.
