"Admitted to hospital for infection"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Emergency Department

(as a service user),

When I was first sent to the a&e last week by my GP, I had a very tight chest, breathless, vomiting, fever, increased pulse, muscle pain and dehydration.

During my first moment of stepping into the hospital i found i was treated fairly, taken quite quickly and all the staff were great.

However when i was admitted i was moved to the Acute emergency receiving unit. When first moved, all was fine,  when the painkillers had worn off my fever come back so bad, no1 had returned for me to have these, so eventually after 45 mins of shaking, i called the nurse and asked for painkillers. They returned sat the cup with 2 painkillers on the table and walked away, I never had a drop of water to take them with.

I had to get up out of the bed and go look for something to drink which i ended up getting from another patient. I thought this was awful, i have never been treated like that by anyone in the Monklands, I felt like a burden and much against the doctors wishes I begged to leave the hospital, the thought of spending another night feeling like that when I'm so ill I really couldn't go.

I don't really like to complain, the thought of someone else having to feel how I did that night is what i want to help be avoided and this is why I'm telling my story.

Dear Customer1,

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback through the Care Opinion platform - I very much appreciate you taking the time to share your experiences so openly. Thank you also for being so honest with your feedback and I understand it is not easy to leave feedback if this is not something you are used to doing.

Firstly, I would like to take the opportunity to apologies sincerely for the care that you received in our Hospital, namely the Acute Emergency Receiving Unit you mention. This falls far below the standard that I and my colleagues would expect and to this end I will personally look into the circumstances surrounding this and revert back to you once I can establish all of the facts. We have two receiving units within the Emergency Care footprint and it would be helpful to know if it was either MAU or AMRU (we don't have an Acute Emergency Receiving Unit at UHM).

Reading through your feedback, it is very clear to me that we didn't get things right for you and it is very clear that we failed you both as a person and as a patient. The fact that you mention feeling like a burden worries me. This should never be the case. I am also concerned that simple things like providing you with fresh water was not adhered to and you had to get this from another patient.

I know that apologies sometimes don't mean much to some but in reading your feedback I am really very sorry for your experiences and would like to speak with you directly to better understand what went so wrong and what we can do to stop this happening again. Please contact me via my Secretary on 01236 712570 who will arrange a suitable time for me to make contact with you.

Best wishes,

Gavin
