"I felt the nurses were too busy"

About: Borders General Hospital / Gynaecology Borders General Hospital / Trauma & orthopaedics (Ward 9)

(as the patient),

I was admitted to ward 9 after having gyne surgery. I felt the nurses were to busy and obviously not aware of my needs to care for me adequately. Why they have take gyne away from ward 16 is wrong I feel, as I believe the staff in ward 9 are unaware or too busy to help support me. There were many things wrong such as my cathetor was overflowing and It was the patient in the bed next to me that told me.   I had no fluid balance chat. No support washing post surgery, was constantly sore until the pain team who was so nice came, he listened and made sure my medicines were changed and given regularly also the pharmacist made sure my regular meds were also added. The student nurse on ward 9 and domestic staff and auxiliaries when they were available were the ones that i felt provided the majority of my care.

I am so sorry to hear that your care needs were not met whilst you were a patient in Ward 9 as this is not the experience we would want any of our patients to have. I would value some direct feedback from you and if you wanted to contact myself in Ward 9, I would be happy to discuss this further with yourself. We are keen to learn from patient's experiences.

Planned Gynae surgical cases are now managed routinely in ward 9 and have been for just over two years, and on the whole we receive a lot of positive feedback and commendations.

I hope you are recovering from your surgery and look forward to hearing from you.

Update posted by Janice123 (the patient)

I am not one to complain and dont feel any harm was done delibrate, more the staff were too busy to care or think of my needs, whilst I was there, the other two ladies had a couple issues too but also did not like to complain so I cant speak for them i just hope that staff are made aware and even if you have time to ask patients how they are feeling or if they need anything it would have been better. I just hope it highlights that there could be improvements thanks
