"A difficult and uncomfortable stay in hospital"

About: Whipps Cross University Hospital

What I liked

SAGE ward:

Three of the nurses.

The bed was comfy

What could be improved

Nurses and care assistants with poor communication skills, many had no bed side manner. Patients were asked loudly about their bowel movements with no discretion whilst others were eating their food. This is humilating for the individual being asked and not nice for others to listen to.

Medication was given and left on bedside table(liquid morphine) and given alongside tramadol causing a frightening reaction. I did not ask for tramadol, it was simply given it. Communication problems led to the misunderstanding that the liquid morphine was meant to be taken an hour after the tramadol.I thought it had to be taken all together. Why would you leave a very strong, controlled substance like morphine on someones bedside table for them to take when they'want to go to sleep'? This was not communicated or monitored. Surely as a nurse you are meant to watch someone take their medication and observe time inbetween taking various meds. As an ill patient who had not been communicated with clearly, I just thought I had to take everything at once.

The manner of some nurses was rude and confrontational. Sage ward was dirty, ants were crawling all over the table and in the lockers,a toilet seat was left abandoned in the patients toilet. The toilet seat had excrement on it. The ward had little or no ventilation.(The windows could open approximately three inches.) One word. Horrendous

Cleanliness

Improved speaking and listening training for those member of staff who have poor communication skills

Food-all bland, frozen, tastless, lacking in nutrients..Too much cake and custard!

Ventilation....

Anything else?

Two of the nurses were lovely.
