"Receptionist giving an unwanted opinion on my..."

About: Lapal Medical Practice

First of all I would like to say on a couple of occasions, the receptionists have given me either medical advice over the phone which they are not trained to do or have given an opinion on my own choice to go down the private route as I've had many problems with the NHS. I asked for my medical records on a Friday afternoon and a lady told me to call back on Monday morning to speak to one particular receptionist in order to get this sorted as I have decided to go private. I called back on the following Monday morning and was told that this receptionist does not work on Mondays and only works on Wednesdays and Fridays. That was frustrating first of all because there's obviously a lack of communication. Following this, the receptionist asked me questions as to why I would like to go private which frankly is none of her business, but I was that fed up I told her that on more than one occasion the GPs have not referred me to outpatients as the hospital has advised which has had me waiting weeks for an appointment with never came through until I chased it up. Also I was told by the same receptionist that I should have asked for a second opinion before I went private and that if I was to make that decision of moving to private healthcare that I would not be allowed to come back to the NHS and it would not speed up my treatment. I never asked this lady for her opinion and she had no right to start telling me what I should or should not do and also try and scare me into not going private. I am already extremely unwell and stress causes me to be in more pain which has happened as a result of my encounter.

She also started asking personal questions such as if I had medical insurance which is also none of her business.

On top of this I had already asked a doctor for a second opinion but was not granted this. I am a young female with a debilitating illness. I am on the highest form of medication (morphine in both tablet form and liquid form) and I'm still in a very very horrible amount of pain. A Dr at the practice last year also explained that there was nothing wrong with me, yet since then I have been diagnosed with an ongoing chronic illness and have had more than one operation due to this. I am very upset with the way I was spoken to on this occasion. I have done my own research and I know what going private means, I don't understand why the receptionist had thought it was their job to ask such personal questions and try to put me off and also advise what I should do with my own healthcare. It's a shame as apart from one particular Dr and a certain receptionist, the rest of the staff have been great. I have raised this with the practice manager and will be taking it higher as all I wanted was my medical notes and I got a lecture instead. This has proved to be so extremely difficult!! No wonder I wanted to go for private healthcare.
