In December 2018 I had the misfortune to drop a 40kg gas cylinder on my left foot. It landed just behind the steel toe cap of my boot and resulted in my suffering a broken metatarsal. I was seen at WCH Urgent care centre and received excellent care.
A week later I attended the Fracture Clinic held at RCHT and this resulted in being admitted to Trauma 2 Ward, there and then to wait an operation. So as to reduce the swelling to the foot in preparation for the operation I had to wear a hydro boot constantly pumping cold water to reduce the discomfort and swelling. I underwent the operation of having plates and pins fitted on the following Saturday. I was discharged from RCHT 4 evenings later.
I am contacting you for two reasons:- Firstly I wish to place on record the fact that during my hospitalisation I have nothing but outstanding praise for all of the staff on Trauma 2 ward, from the cleaning staff, the domestic staff and of course the medical staff. These staff are absolutely brilliant -without exception!
Secondly I am absolutely disgusted with the treatment that these staff receive by many of the patients. Many of the patients admitted to the ward during my stay doled out verbal abuse but on a couple of occasions bordered on them becoming aggressive towards staff. Again the staff acted with total dignity and professionalism but they should not have to be subject to such behaviour. On one occasion a staff nurse was obviously very upset by a patient who just totally ignored her. I know the hospital is subject to frequent CQC ins sections but I would be more than happy to be contacted by them to give them an insight of how good the Trauma 2 ward really is. The staff work in a very difficult and challenging environment, somewhat short staffed but manage to produce outstanding care which I cannot thank them enough for
