"Pregnancy scare visit to A and E"

About: City Hospital / Accident and emergency

after experiencing a few short sharp but worrying pains when 9 weeks pregnant I was sent by my dr to A and E at city hospital Birmingham. I was seen by a nurse in 15 minutes who reassured me that it might take a while but given my condition they wanted to do full mot (bloods scan etc) before sending me home. We waited patiently and were finally called through at ten minutes short of 4 hour wait. They tested my urine and said they would refer me for a scan and I would be contacted within 24/48 hours. I went home, rested and waited. 48 hours came and went and no call or text from EPU. We paid for a private scan a few days later to discover there was now no heartbeat when there had been at 9 weeks. My ‘referral’ for a scan from A and E came half an hour after I came back from surgery to have the pregnancy removed. Very considerate but expect this only happened then because EPU investigates the so called referral.

Fast forward 11 days I’m again referred to A and E for miscarriage complications this time. Again a nurse told me not to worry they would give me a full check and a scan before sending me home. I told them that a few days previously a 16mm tissue had been picked up on a scan I had because of severe pain while at my mums in Glasgow. No one even looked at the paper work. I was told to put that away. 3hours 50 minutes passed - I was told my blood was normal and to go home. No scan and no one had checked thenurine sample I had given either.

They refused to give me a paper copy of what they had done because although they had discharged me and told me to go home technically they hadn’t discharged me on the computer and were too busy now to do so.

3 days later my own gp has taken one look at me and referred me straight away to gynaecology.

I am sorry about the care you received when visiting our A&E department on both occasions. This is not the standard of care that we would aim to provide someone visiting our Emergency Department and I apologise for the way you were spoken to when you tried to offer some guidance on your condition.

I would like to investigate what happened further.

Would you be able to email Annabel Bottrill, the Matron for A&E, at annabel.bottrill@nhs.net who will look into your care.

Kind regards,

Toby Lewis, Chief Executive.
