"Concern for end of life care patients"

About: Falkirk Community Hospital / Older peoples' services

(as a relative),

My mother was in hospital for approximately 9 months due to breaking her hip. After her 2nd surgery, she went to unit 3 frail elderly ward at Falkirk Community Hospital. I complained about various aspects of her care & I'm afraid I'm very disappointed with the outcome. My main concerns were mainly about lack of dignity, lack of forming good professional relations with patients and lack of stimulation within the environment. Within the letter it states that my Mum choose to keep herself to herself within her single room. My Mum had dementia although at times she came across very well & I don't think staff took the time to get to know my Mum or spent any quality time in her company. I was handed a get to know me sheet, weeks after she arrived on the ward. Within this environment, many patients are either very poorly, require palliative care or are awaiting a package of care to either go home or go to a care home. I would ask you to have empathy with the fact that for many of these patients, they will not return home, therefore making the ward environment more homely, having empathy for what the person may be going through i. e. may be scared of the future, anxious, frightened due to a strange environment, would go a long way. I also feel putting a television on within the bay units or single rooms is the only stimulation these people receive, I believe this is unacceptable & I would ask you if this was your parent would you be happy with them in this environment? Whilst there are many good staff, they do not have the time to spend with individuals thus making the environment very clinical & I feel staff can be task orientated. Again, I feel this needs to be addressed. It would be useful for all staff to have palliative care training or input about end of life care. In relation to my Mum not having an advocate due to me being her power of attorney is absolute nonsense, everyone should be entitled to an advocate who is completely independent. I will be taking my concerns further as I'm appalled that elderly individuals are treated in this manner & that this environment is acceptable. I feel the building & most of the hospital is not fit for purpose and certainly does not cater for families & friends particularly at a weekend.

Dear moja31,

Thank you so much for taking the time to get in touch.

First of all I would like to sincerely apologise for your mother's experience in FCH Unit 3. What you describe does not meet the standards I would expect with regards to compassionate person-centred care, there are a few themes within your feedback that I shall pick up with the team. I do, however, appreciate your positive observations regarding the members of staff within unit 3.

It would be useful if you could get in touch to allow me to better understand the issues you describe in your mother's care, I would be keen to meet to discuss this further and can be contacted via the Patient Relations Team on 01324-566523.

Kind regards,

Patrick
