"Staff attitudes"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Emergency Department

(as the patient),

Was sent by my GP to Wishaw General accident and emergency.   It was a Saturday afternoon and rather busy with a waiting time of 3 hours.

When I approached the reception area I was asked my details and the reason I was attending,  which I gave although its not private and people in the waiting area can hear everything. Due to the nature of my visit I found this embarrassing.

While I was in the waiting area a woman went to the reception and the person behind the reception was very rude to her.  More people came in and they were treated exactly the same with them.  The reception staff,  especially this person really need to have training on how to speak to people.

Then there's the nurses and doctors:

While I was waiting I noticed that there are two points where staff call out the names of patients,  one door at triage and one where you go in for treatment,  A nurse called a patients name from the triage side, although due to the large waiting area its hard for patients to hear the name being called.  Instead of walking around to the other side and calling the name again they stood and called again and shook their head when no one got up.

I appreciate that this environment is highly pressured by the amount of people, and sometimes by the type of people although this is their job and you just have to deal with it.

Then It was my turn to be seen by a doctor who seemed speak very quickly and in turn rushed me.  I was asked twice why I was there with my symptoms and I said that I was told to come by my GP.  The doctor rolled their eyes. I was made to feel like a fraud and was discharged with the advice that next time I should just go to my GP.

Turns out that the GP was correct in sending me to A&E and that the doctor in this case had failed to recognise an issue with my health that was dealt with by another hospital,

Dont know if the issue is with shortage in staff resulting in a pressured workplace  or another reason but my experience was not a good one especially when I needed help.

Bad attitudes seemed to be the norm in this department at this time which is disappointing.
