"A distressing consult"

About: County Hospital Louth / Colorectal surgery

(as a service user),

I had a gastro appointment  at Louth County Hospital because I thought it was time I checked out my rumbling gut.   Talking to the "specialist" was similar to talking to some elderly people I know who don't remember that they have just asked the question.

They asked if there was any colon cancer in the family and I said my brother who had died before Christmas and how old he was. They started again - how old IS your brother - several times  and so it went on. English wasn't their first language so that didn't help but then they said I knew I was anaemic didn't I?  NO my ferritin is through the roof.  But they kept on insisting I am anaemia.  My mind took me to the trouble I must be in if I had suddenly become anaemia something must be seriously wrong. They kept on insisting and saying your blood test on 21st February said so - and I questioned that - 21st of February they insisted. It isn't always easy to think back but on that date I was at a family event in London and I was pretty certain I didn't go to the GP the day I got home! EVENTUALLY the doctor admitted they had the wrong patient up on the screen helped by the nurse. Said it's been a long day - what on earth is the excuse for not having the right patient's details up on the screen? I was asked about previous operations so I listed them in order.  Six operations, five of which on my torso.

Then came the examination and the doctor asked if my Caesar scar was the appendectomy.  My scar runs from the navel straight down and was used for all four operations.  The appendix is no where near there.  I feel really upset by this experience and want to make sure I do not see this person again.  I would also like to be sure they don't frighten anyone else with a similar appointment.

Dear Pippah45

thank you for sharing your story which clearly shows a break down in communication and language barriers. I have shared this with the team at Louth so they can discuss your story within the team.

Your comments surrounding the "wrong "patient" is very alarming and should never occur. As a trust we have just recently introduced 'ID you patients' campaign to highlight how important it is to positively identify patients. ULHT has a responsibility to act in the best interests and maintain safety of all the patients. A key component of this is to correctly identify each patient to ensure care received is appropriate, timely and safe. Matching patients to their care is a high priority for improving patient safety as any mismatches can cause serious errors. Everyone should ensure that they positively identify their patient.
