My main complaint is about the lack of communication. My Mum was not spoken to by a clinician in 10.5 hours.
A Doctor did initial examination, with very little discussion. A nurse witnessed a seizure, again hardly spoke.
She administered the medicine, nobody told her what it was, the effects etc.
A ward clerk came to fill in some paperwork and that is how we found out she was being admitted.
A porter came and that is how we found out she was having a ct scan.
Following the scan all of the bays were gone and my mum was sat in a bed in the middle of A&E. Next to an elderly man who had nobody with him and was left with a tray and empty cup for I don't know how long until he asked me to move it.
I appreciate the capacity and flow issues along with staff shortages and retention issues. However I am concerned about the culture in this area, staff seemed to have no interest rather than no time. No warmth, smile or even eye contact.
What I witnessed was not dissimilar from things I can read in the Francis report.
The star grading reflect blood on curtains, lack of confidentiality, somebody shouting "please help me I need the toilet" and 3 staff members ignoring him.
My Mum received fantastic care once she got to the ward. I know these people save lives everyday and am thankful for that, though within a culture such as this there may be missed opportunity to save more.
"Saddened and shocked."
