Yesterday 12/03/19 I was admitted for Hammertoe surgery and arrived at 7am. I was shown to my ‘bed’ straight away by a very friendly member of staff & my details were taken. All good so far! My complaint is about the most uncomfortable ward I have ever spent time on & whilst I totally understand that the you can’t be given an exact time for your operation, it would have made a world of difference if I could have been warm & on or in a comfortable bed whilst waiting. Apparently the beds are designed for being wheeled into theatre so,very hard & cold. The ward itself had the air conditioning on & I spent the entire morning (I was taken down to theatre at 12.15) shivering as did other patients, I did complain & was given an extra light blanket which, quite honestly, was pretty useless. It was an extremely uncomfortable 5 hours & of cause I was taken back there after surgery. I have had several operations in the James Paget hospital over the years, mainly day cases & I've always been warm and comfortable on a ‘proper’ bed! Even if these beds are nessesary, a warmer ward would have made my stay more bearable. Having said all this, the extremely busy, overworked staff were wonderful.
I hope my comments will be taken seriously so that other patients don’t have to endure what I experienced yesterday.
Jackie Nash.
