"Glad they are investigating but left quite traumatised"

About: Grantham & District Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

I had a routine smear and the nurse said they could see a polyp on my cervix and referred me straight away to Gynaecology to investigate.   I had no idea what to expect.   Went in, was asked some questions, doctor didn't appear to be listening and spoke over me (this was last appointment of the day and I assume they wanted to get rid of me as quickly as possible).   Had to assume the usual position on a couch while they inserted the speculum.   It was very uncomfortable and done with little care.

The doctor had a good look round and then got some tweezers to twist off the polyp.   Very uncomfortable, traumatic and painful.   Scraped and twisted and gouged.   Managed to get a specimen of bloody flesh into a sample bottle.   I was shaking and stunned at the end but they just said get dressed and come through.   I managed to ask if it was a polyp.   No they said said, it was definitely not a polyp.   I asked what it was and they didn't know.  The doctor did mention to the nurse that maybe they should have done a punch biopsy but by then had already gouged out some flesh from my cervix.   I was left bleeding for about 5 days afterwards.   I assumed sample would be tested and I'd get the results but not heard anything.

This was over a week ago. I have since been for a pelvic scan and I have a Colposcopy booked for a week's time.   I am glad they are investigating but I was left quite traumatised and have had to block it out of my mind as it was so awful.   Not looking forward to instalment number 2 when I have the colposcopy - I am worried this will be just as traumatic and painful.   I am 53 and was told by the smear nurse that it can get more painful following the menopause to have smears and checks.   It was certainly the case when the nurse did the smear but was so gentle and kind.   Completely different to the examination that took place with the doctor who hacked off the polyp that was "definitely not a polyp".
