My mother suffers from end stage COPD and after beginning admitted to XH ended up in 5E. This a surgical ward but the hospital was overwhelmed with patients that week. My mum was very breathless and anxious but the staff spent a lot of time trying to reassure her.
They were very responsive despite not being a medical ward however, she should have had her medication increased and new ones added and she did once I asked. Lucky for my mum I am a medical nurse so could question her medication. I feel that boarding medical patients in a surgical ward isn't fair to staff and the patient.
Unfortunately my mum's condition worsened and she was moved to 3B, a respiratory ward. Again the nursing care was fabulous. The care and attention my mum received was first class and they were so kind to the family. My mum's condition deteriorated greatly and she was moved to a side room.
My main complaint is the relative room. We weren't offered the use of it, just the patients' TV room. Unfortunately my mum passed away and at this point we were shown into the relative room as a Dr was certifying her death. Two members of staff entered with their lunch. This highlights the true use of this room - A STAFF ROOM! If this the case please remove the sign of the door. As this was so upsetting.
Please pass on my praise to the nursing staff and the domestic staff of ward 5E and ward 3B.
"Fabulous nursing that made me proud to be a nurse"
