"Excellent care but better communication needed "

About: New Victoria Hospital (Glasgow)

(as the patient),

my first visit with the consultant at the national health hospital I had received excellent treatment - this continued through to my recent hand operation - I was consulted at all levels by all staff ( even being escorted by nursing staff to the TV lounge area )

On my admittance to the anaesthetist area I was received and attended by a nurse and two anaesthetists. The nurse proceeded to take my blood pressure as I was being prepared for sedation - however before the nurse had finished - the anaesthetist started to inject my hand (as I had a mask over my mouth) I had difficulty telling them I was in great pain from the front of my hand up my arm to my elbow - although this took less than a minute - the injection was not working as quickly as normal for me and it wasn't until the nurse told the anaesthetist she hadn't finished the blood pressure did it stop - at this point I managed to get the Dr to understand I was in a lot of pain. She had tried to calm me when I was trying to tell her previously about the pain. It was only when the nurse stopped the blood pressure machine did I drift off.

After the operation I had the same excellent treatment

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to let us know about your recent experience. Your posting indicated the New Victoria Hospital as well as the Royal Victoria Day Hospital, however I have treated your comments as directed at the facility in Greater Glasgow & Clyde (New Victoria) rather than elsewhere.

I am sure that the staff involved will be very pleased to read your very kind and thoughtful remarks. I was sorry to read that you had an anxious experience while being sedated, I was also glad to read that the staff in attendance looked after you during this short but uncomfortable period.

Once again my thanks for posting your comments. Reading these mean a great deal to the staff involved.

Paul
