About: Gloucestershire Royal Hospital / Accident and emergency

I attended A&E at the Gloucestershire Royal Hospital on Saturday 1 March as I had fallen and cut my mouth which required stitching. I have absolutely no complaints about the service I received which was professional, prompt and courteous, and I am most grateful for the help I was given. After I returned home, I was phoned and asked to complete a telephone survey about my experience. While appreciating the need to consult patients and understanding the value of quality control, I'm afraid I found the structure of this survey so ludicrous and inappropriate I feel some concerns if future policy and funding decisions are to be based on its results. Firstly, I was asked if I would recommend the hospital to others in the same situation. I was bleeding profusely and this was a minor emergency - surely anybody would go to the nearest hospital in these circumstances and, so long as we have an NHS, they should be able to expect any emergency clinic in the country to be able to take the appropriate action? Shopping around wasn't really an option. Then I was asked to select from a list the reason for my score in the previous question, in other words to prioritise one at the expense of others, when they should surely all be applicable to any public hospital. At this point, I am afraid I abandoned the questionnaire.

I was on holiday when I visited the hospital so it was unfamiliar to me, and my only suggestion would be that the signage and access to the A&E department at the Gloucestershire Royal could be improved.
