"Tilgate ward"

About: East Surrey Hospital / Respiratory medicine

After 5 days in Tilgate ward I have an overall opinion that the service from all staff was good.

The ward manager was excellent.. no explanation was too much trouble. However the ward bed area needs better cleaning. The floors should be hovered or swept before they are washed. I watched staff just push around the dirt with a wet mop.

The food trays/trolleys that over hang the beds were never cleaned in the 5 days I was there. The actual food trays were unclean ie sticky underneath. They should be washed with antibacterial fluid daily.

Staff are generally not washing their hands enough in between patients.

I am most concerned to hear about your experiences relating to the floor cleaning process. The Housekeeper absolutely should be vacuuming floor areas before they are wet mopped and I will investigate this with the Housekeeping team. The food trays are washed centrally through a flight dishwasher at temperatures that ensure they are correctly decontaminated. I can only apologised if you were given trays that were sticky underneath and will ask our catering team to carry out some spot checks in the central kitchen. If you would like to speak with me further about your concerns I would be very happy to do so. I can be contacted by email at carol.dixon4@nhs.net
