(as a parent/guardian),

My daughter attended A&E as she was having an asthma attack. She arrived at 4.15 and wasn’t seen for 1.5 hours. She was taking ventolin inhaler every 15 mins. Eventually had a chest x-ray, SATS and blood taken. Finally after being there 6 hours she was seen by a nurse at 10pm, because her SATS were fine and the chest x-ray was clear the nurse decided, in bad wisdom, that it wasn’t an asthma attack and she had a viral illness in her throat. She was advised to go home and drink water.

Asthma can be life threatening and as a mum 70 miles away when my daughter is at uni I expected far better care. She didn’t see a Dr the whole time.  Because of the lack of care she came home to see our GP who said she should have had a nebuliser and steroids. Thankfully we have a good GP who treated her well. 

The staff need educating about the symptoms, dangers and treatment of Asthma before someone dies needlessly.

Thank you for your response. I will speak to my daughter but I know that she will want me to talk to you. She is training to do Pharmacy at Nottingham Uni and was shocked at what happened.

I’m very pleased that you’d like to talk so the necessary staff can be trained on how to deal with this in future.
