About: Darent Valley Hospital / Accident and emergency

Arrived at A+E in the evening, saw on the screen that the waiting time was 6 hours. I understand that a& e has a problem with time wasters, but in their defence they probably couldn’t get an appointment with their GP.

There were clearly some very unwell people vomiting in the seating area, they looked so uncomfortable and embarrassed.

Then just as you think it’s your turn ( after assessment has been done)you are seen by a doctor , then sent back to the seating area for another 2 hours!. People were coming back and forth a few times, only to find there were no seats left ,The seats are so uncomfortable, I realise they have to put up with a lot of wear etc. But metal seats for 6 hours!

Some of the medical staff were miserable and made you feel like you were a part on a conveyer belt. One chap in a white uniform dragged a poorly elderly lady in her bedclothes backwards in the wheelchair, her blanket catching in the wheels , how undignifiying for the lady who was very upset..

The reception staff were kind and helpful as was the Doctor when we finally got see him, though a little difficult to understand at times..

Dear Anonymous

We were sorry to read your review and fully appreciate that having to sit a long time in our Emergency Department waiting area can be frustrating. We do also understand your comment regarding the GP appointments, however, we do ask that people do not attend the Emergency Department just because of this as there are alternatives available such as NHS111 or an Urgent Care Centre . Also, we are not sure if you are aware, but all patients who attend the Emergency Department (walk in or ambulance) are triaged on arrival and seen in order of emergency.

Life threatening and seriously injured patients will always taking priority. This does mean that any patients with minor aliments will usually wait longer whilst our staff care for the more serious cases.

We are extremely proud of our staff, who work very hard, sometimes in very difficult circumstances however, we would expect them to be professional and courteous at all times.

Kind regards

The Communications Team
